Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced diagnostic imaging technique that provides detailed images of the human anatomy without the use of harmful radiation. MRI is non-invasive, using radio frequency waves and a strong magnetic field to generate highly detailed two or three-dimensional images. It can help clinicians diagnose injuries and illnesses of the skeleton, brain, spine, abdomen and soft tissue.

MRI enables doctors to diagnose medical conditions and recommend effective treatment.

MRI can be used in the following areas:

  • Musculoskeletalknee, hand, wrist, ankle, feet, shoulders and hips
  • Neuroimaginghead, neck and vertebral column
  • Brain concussion, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)
  • Spinecervical, thoracic and lumbar
  • Breast cancer screening and implant inspection
  • Prostatecancer screening

In addition to serving the clinical needs of doctors and their patients, the 3-Tesla positions IRM Moncton MRI at the leading edge of research. We also offer our services to neurology research teams. The medical staff at IRM Moncton MRI are pleased to be able to provide you with the very best in MRI imaging.

Our Staff

Our highly trained registered MRI Technologists will perform your MRI. Following the scan, our NB board-certified radiologists will analyze your MRI images and prepare a detailed report.

A written diagnostic report will be sent to your referring physician and treating clinicians for consultation and review. Your physician will discuss diagnostic and pathologic assessment findings and the next steps with you.

About the Procedure

The procedure begins with a requisition from your physician or treating clinicians.

Prior to your appointment, you will be asked to complete an MRI safety questionnaire and provide written consent. A technologist will review this form with you before starting the exam to ensure it is safe for you to go into the MRI room and will ensure we have your consent. You will be able to ask our technologists any questions you may have.

You will be asked to change into a gown and placed on a sliding table by the technologist. You will be positioned comfortably in the bore of the scanner. You will be asked not to move and to breathe normally for the duration of the exam because movement degrades the image quality.

The technologist will leave the room and program individual MRI angles that typically last between 2 and 6 minutes each. The MRI machine makes a tapping or knocking noise, which will be heard during the imaging process. You will be given earplugs to protect your hearing. You can communicate with the technologist at any time during the study using a call bell and intercom. Depending on the number of images necessary, the study will generally take 20 to 45 minutes.

Depending on the study, a contrast material (gadolinium) may be injected intravenously into an arm vein. This material will enhance specific tissues or blood vessels, making them more conspicuous and aiding diagnosis.

Some patients may find the MRI machine makes them feel claustrophobic, especially during a brain MRI. If you think you might have a hard time with the exam, please talk to your doctor. They may prescribe a mild sedative to help you relax during the scan.

Advanced Technology

3-Tesla MRI, also known as 3T MRI, is considered a global innovation in magnetic resonance imaging. It offers two to three times the signal of an ordinary one aa and 1.5-Tesla MRI. The 3-Tesla is recognized for yielding images significantly superior for examinations of the knee, shoulder, ankle, wrist, elbow, spine and brain, among other areas of the body.

The 3-Tesla MRI also means a faster exam with a larger 70-cm-diametre tunnel for enhanced comfort, especially for those with claustrophobia or obesity. If you are claustrophobic, you may want to talk to your doctor before your MRI appointment to see if medication will help you.
